I am a physician-scientist specializing in cancer epidemiology, with a primary focus on socioeconomic disparities in cancer outcomes. My clinical background in thoracic surgery made me aware of how differences in access to treatment and quality of care can translate into survival gaps. Building on this, I have devoted my academic career to investigating how such inequities arise and how they may be addressed. My research draws on diverse data sources, including medical records, nationwide large-scale databases such as the cancer registry and Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) data, and population-based cohort studies. I have also coordinated large-scale cohorts, which strengthened my ability to ensure data quality and generate reliable evidence from complex, multi-regional datasets. Using these resources, my studies have shown, for the first time with nationwide cancer registry data, that net survival for lung cancer differs across socioeconomic strata, and that neighborhood deprivation is associated with oncologic emergency admissions for colorectal cancer. A central theme of my work is the identification of remediable inequities—inequities in care and outcomes shaped by structural deficiencies. I now focus on analyzing the underlying factors that generate such inequities, which is also the subject of the research I am submitting for this prize. I aim for these findings to inform health policy and guide resource allocation, contributing to more equitable cancer control. To date, I have authored peer-reviewed publications, presented at national and international conferences, and received recognitions, including the Congress President’s Special Prize from the Japan Association of Cancer Registries. Looking ahead, I am committed to strengthening international collaborations and producing evidence that will reduce socioeconomic inequities in cancer care and outcomes worldwide.
