Auspices and Sponsorships to courses and conferences

2018

• The Fondo Anglesio Moroni and the Fondazione Tempia co-sponsored and organized the scientific conference “Cancer Control in Piedmont”, held in Biella on 13-14 December 2018. The conference gathered specialists in Epidemiology, Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment from European, Italian and Piedmontese research institutions and hospitals. The venue for the first day was the conference room of the Palace Hotel Agorà, and for the second day the conference room of the Biella hospital. The President of the Fondo Anglesio Moroni, Dr. Alberto Anglesio, and the Vice-President of The Fondazione Tempia, Ms Viola Erdini welcomed the participants.

The first session has been devoted to the aspects of Measuring the impact of cancer at population level, and of using the data for planning and evaluating the care. Stefano Rosso, Piedmont Cancer Registry offered a picture of incidence, mortality and survival from cancer for the population of the Region, while Carlotta Buzzoni, on behalf of the Italian Association of Registries showed the data at the national level. The continental perspective was presented by Manola Bettio, of the European Joint Research Center of Ispra, and the data on cancer at the global level were summarized by Freddie Bray of the International Agency for Research on Cancer of Lyon. Jan Willem Coebergh brought examples of the Dutch experience of using the data for planning the oncological services. Hans Storm reported on the long experience of the Danish Cancer Registry, with focus on new challenges in automating the process of production of the data and in sharing them with the medical and scientific community. The session was closed by Elisabete Weiderpass, the new Director of IARC in Lyon, with a series of remarks on how the impact data can guide the strategies for global cancer control. The second session, Data for Prevention and Care , consisted of a sequence of examples of the use of the data produced by the Cancer Registries. Liesbeth Van Eycken from Brussels showed the role of the population data for taking decisions on centralizing the surgical treatment of pancreatic and oesophageal cancer in Belgium. Fabrizio Faggiano, University of Novara, discussed data based strategies to contrast the tobacco use. Matteo Della Porta, Milan, reported on clinical aspects of clonal haematopoiesis in elderly as assessed by linkage with Cancer Registries data. Carlotta Buzzoni, Florence, presented the methods for gathering large amount of survival data to produce data at national level.

The second day (conference welcomed at the Biella hospital by its Director, Lorenzo Maffioli) started with the third session devoted to Screening and Early Detection. Iacopo Baussano, IARC, Lyon, discussed the advantages of modelling the viral transmission and the immunization process for optimizing the cervical cancer control. Mimmo Ronco, as well from IARC, presented the problems of the strategies for screening women beyond age 50. Livia Giordano, Centre for Cancer Prevention, Turin, discussed the strategies for breast cancer screening. Daniele Regge, from the IRCCS Candiolo, presented new imaging technologies for cancer diagnosis. Carlo Senore, Centre for Cancer Prevention, Turin, discussed new strategies for colon cancer screening. Alessio Naccarati, of the Italian Institute for Genomic Medicine, Turin, presented genetic complementary tools for early diagnosis of colon cancer. The forth session was devoted to Melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers . Simone Ribero, Torino University, presented stimulating examples of integration of the genetic research findings into the clinical practice. Nadem Soufir, Paris, offered a speech in two parts: the genetic testing of the predisposition to melanoma and pancreatic cancer. Sara Gandini, IEO Milan, reviewed the topic of biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis. Maria Scatolini, Biella, updated the audience on the molecular markers in melanoma diagnosis. Pietro Quaglino, University of Torino, offered a review of the most recent clinical trials on target therapy and immunotherapy of melanoma. Lidia Sacchetto, Politecnico di Torino, presented a time trend analysis of a large pool of European Registries data, aimed to find predictors of melanoma lethality.

The last session dealt with Prostate Cancer, Giovanna Chiorino, Genomic laboratory at Fondo Tempia, presented new non-invasive techniques for the early detection. Valentina Fiano, University of Torino, presented results on DNA methylation markers in prostate cancer. Daniele Liscia, Biella Hospital, discussed the role of virtual microscopy in prostate pathology. Stefano Zaramella, Biella Hospital, reviewed the recent advances in diagnosis and surgery of prostate cancer. Finally, Andrea Zitella, Turin, showed the possibilities of robotic surgery in the managements of the primary lesions and the lymph nodes. At the end of session two, the contribution to cancer prevention of late Dr. Adriano Giacomin, who had established the Biella Cancer Registry, was remembered by Dr. Stefano Rosso. The staff at the Fondazione Tempia, led by Mrs Angelica Mercandino, assured an excellent organization of the scientific and social aspects of the conference. Mrs Franca Gilardi at Piedmont Cancer Registry cooperated with dedication.

2016

• Dr Roberto Zanetti, vice-president of Fondo Anglesio Moroni, has been an “Invited Spreaker” of
the 2016 UICC World Cancer Congress, held in Paris on 31 October – 3 November.

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the GEM (Genes, Environments and Melanoma) Annual Meeting, held in Ragusa Ibla (Italy) on 27-28 September 2016; moreover it organized, with the Tempia Fundation of Biella, the “2016 GEM meets Europe” meeting (Ragusa Ibla, 29 September)

• Dr Roberto Zanetti, thanks to the support of the “Cancer Council Queensland Charles and Mary Knight Travelling Fellowship”, partecipated in the 8th General Assembly of Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention (APOCP), held in Brisbane (Australia) on 13-15 April 2016. In this occasion, he also presented the Charles and Mary Knight Lecture.

2015

• On 1 – 2 December 2015, Pr Adbellatif Benider, from the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Ibn Rochd in Casablanca, Pr Maria Bennani, deputy director of the Lalla Salma Fundation and Ms Houda Fakhkhari, project manager of the Lalla Salma Foundation, visited the Piedmont Cancer Registry, in Turin. The initiative has been supported by Fondo Anglesio Moroni, in the setting of cooperation between Piedmont and Moroccan Institutions.

• Dr Alberto Anglesio, President of Fondo Anglesio Moroni, together with his son Luca, organized the
charity golf competition “Trofeo Enrico Anglesio 2015” on 11 October 2015 at the Golf Club Le Fronde,
Avigliana, near Turin.

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the 37 th IACR Conference, held in Mumbai (India) on 8 – 10 October 2015.

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the GEM (Genes, Environments and Melanoma) Annual Meeting, held in Banff (Canada) on 28-30 September 2015. Dr Roberto Zanetti, Dr Stefano Ros so and Dr Lidia Sacchetto attended the meeting and presented to the colleagues projects on melanoma on going at the Piedmont Cancer Registry.

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the Conference “Approccio diagnostico/terapeutico tradizionale e traslazionale a melanomi cutanei e basaliomi”, held in Biella (Italy) on 12 June 2015 and organized by the Tempia Foundation and the University of Eastern Piedmont.

2014

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the 7th Workshop EUROSKIN “Uv and Vitamin D in Skin Cancer Prevention”, held at the European Institute of Oncology (Milan, Italy) on 24-25 November 2014. International experts from basic sciences, epidemiology and dermatology presented new results in research dealing with the risks of solar and sunbed UV, skin cancer epidemiology, UV dependent vitamin D synthesis, consequences of vitamin deficiencies and risk communication; they discussed and approved guidelines for sun exposure and use of sunbeds (downloadable from the website). Dr Stefano Rosso (many times President of the Jury of the Enrico Anglesio Prize), Dr Lidia Sacchetto and Dr Maria Scatolini has been invited speakers.

• On 21 — 24 October 2014, Prof Adbellatif Benider, from the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Ibn Rochd in Casablanca, and Dr Mohammed Adnane Tazi, from the Moroccan Ministry of Health, visited the Piedmont Cancer Registry in Turin, the Biella Cancer Registry, and the Tempia Foundation. The initiative has been supported by Fondo Anglesio Moroni, in the setting of cooperation between Piedmont and Moroccan Institutions. The registry’s staff of Torino and Biella showed to Prof Benider and Dr Tazi methods and procedures of cancer registration. Moreover they visited the Cancer Genomics Lab and the Molecular Oncology Lab of the Tempia Foundation and met Dr Moro and Dr Bagnasacco from the Radiotherapy Department of the New Hospital in Biella. Following Dr Penna’s invitation, Prof Benider and Dr Tazi also participated in the opening ceremony for a new nuclear medicine facility.

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the GEM (Genes, Environments and Melanoma) Annual Meeting, held in Castagneto Carducci on 25-26 September 2014; moreover it organized, with the Tempia Foundation of Biella, the “GEM meets Europe” meeting (Castagneto Carducci, 24 September), to allow Italian and European researchers to meet the GEM colleagues and to share experiences and updates on melanoma researches. Participants in the two meetings came from USA, Canada, Argentina, Australia, UK, Ireland, Germany, France and Italy.

• On 20-24 May 2014, Dr Roberto Zanetti and Dr Pietro Presti, Director of the Tempia Foundation in
Biella, travelled to Morocco to develop a technical twinning between the Piedmont Cancer Registry and the Rabat and Casablanca Cancer Registries. Dr Zanetti and Dr Presti met Dr Adnane Tazi and Dr
Noureddine Benjaafar at the Institut National d’Oncologie in Rabat, and Prof Abdelletif Benider at
the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Ibn Rochd in Casablanca. They were further received by HM Princess Lalla Salma at the Lalla Salma Foundation. Dr Zanetti, who also represented the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and its Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR), visited the Health Department and met the WHO national representative Dr Latifa Belakhel. Moroccan colleagues are planning to visit Piedmont in the fall of 2014.

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the workshop “Focus on some developments in melanoma research”, held in Biella on 9-10 April 2014, jointly organized by the Piedmont Cancer Registry and the Tempia Foundation.

2013

• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored the Conference “The new frontiers in cancer control: an overall view”. The Conference, which was held in Torino and Biella on 10-11 May, was organized by the Tempia Foundation with UICC auspices. Prof Tezer Kutluk, President elect of UICC, gave the opening lecture.
• Fondo Anglesio Moroni raised funds for charity during golf competitions. Special thanks to Ivan Savini (EDALCA, Turin) who donated proceeds of the competition held at the Golf Club Feudo d’Asti, and to competitors in the Anglesio Cup 2013 (Sestriere Sporting Club on 9 August 2013) for their donations.

2012
• Fondo Anglesio Moroni organized a charity golf competition on 21 April 2012 at the Golf Club Le Fronde, Avigliana, near Turin. The Golf People Club Magazine was media partner of the event.
• Sponsored the 34th IACR Conference, held in Cork (Ireland) on 17 – 19 September.
• Auspiced the 2012 GEM Meeting, held in Turin on 30 September – 1 October.
• Auspiced the course “Approccio Multidisciplinare al Melanoma Cutaneo”, organized by the Presidio Sanitario Gradenigo, held in Turin on 30 November – 01 December 2012.

2011
• Fondo Anglesio Moroni joined IACR’s Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR).
• Fondo Anglesio Moroni organized two charity golf competitions:

2010
• Auspiced the Conference “Il tumore germinale del testicolo: è ancora un tumore raro? Riflessioni epidemiologiche e di metodologia clinica”, during the Giornata del Volontario nei Tumori Rari. The meeting, held on 11 September 2010, has been organised by Dr. Alessandro Comandone, Ospedale Gradenigo.

2009
• Auspiced the “Deuxième Journée Francophone de Lutte Contre le Cancer en faveur des pays en voie de développement”, held in Montpellier (France) on 3 April 2009.

2008
• Fondo Anglesio Moroni sponsored “Reel Lives, The Cancer Chronicles”, the First Film Festival challenging the Cancer stigma, which took place in Geneva, August 28-30 2008. With over 260 entries from 40 countries around the world and film genres, films covered patients’ stories, documented scientific research and relayed Public Service Announcements. Some prestigious filmmakers presented their movies, for example Freeheld directed by Cynthia Wade, which in 2008 won the Oscar for the best short documentary film, and Une Année de Sable directed by Eric Liston Grant. In this occasion Fondo Anglesio Moroni offered a special prize dedicated to the memory of Margherita Rey Anglesio: the winner has been “Les enfants de l’Avenir Maroc” directed by Bruno Peyronnet.

• Sponsored Dr Pierre Band, University of Montreal, Canada, for the conference titled “History of Medical Oncology”. The conference was held in Torino, on 29 April 2008 in occasion of the celebration of the centenary of Enrico Anglesio’s birth, and repeated in Parma on 1st May, within the yearly GRELL meeting.
