Samantha Morais has a BSc Hons in Science and Technology Studies (York University, Canada) and obtained an MSc in Epidemiology (FMUP) with the dissertation “Dealing with missing data: an application in the study of family history of hypertension”. She was awarded a research fellowship within the project “Determinants of gastric and esophageal cancers incidence in the north of Portugal” (PTDC/SAU-EPI/122460/2010). She completed her PhD in Public Health (FMUP) with the thesis “Risk and survival of gastric cancer related second primary tumours: a competing risks framework” (SFRH/BD/102585/2014). She was a post-doctoral researcher within the project “NEON-PC – Neuro-oncological complications of prostate cancer: longitudinal study of cognitive decline” (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-032358) and was awarded a competitive Junior Researcher position at the Institute of Public Health – University of Porto with a project that aimed to study the incidence, survival and healthcare use of subsequent primary cancers in Northern Portugal (UIDB/04750/2020). She has experience in (co-)supervising students (2 ongoing PhDs and 4 completed MScs), and was an Invited Assistant Professor in Epidemiology (2019-21) and Statistics (Curricular Unit Director, 2020-21) at the University of Porto Medical School. She is a member of the Non Communicable Diseases Epidemiology research group (EPIUnit ISPUP).

Samantha is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology at McGill University. She joined the Division of Cancer Epidemiology at McGill in September 2021, and she assists the Division’s research program on human papillomavirus infection and associated cancers. Her research interests are in cancer epidemiology and public health, with a special focus on the burden of cancer outcomes other than death.
