I am Alberto Catalano, and I was born on May 8, 1995. I have a master’s degree in Statistical and Economic Methods for Decisions, and a Ph. D in Experimental Medicine and Therapy, both obtained from the University of Turin in 2020 and 2024, respectively. Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Eastern Piedmont, working in the Department of Translational Medicine. My research focuses on epidemiology, where I apply statistical methods to explore complex health issues, particularly on healthy aging. Throughout my career, I have focused on several key areas within epidemiology and public health. My research has focused on multimorbidity, particularly in the context of oncological, respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases, COVID-19, and social inequalities. Thanks to my background in statistics, I approach these topics using both standard and advanced statistical techniques. My expertise includes not only traditional methods such as simple regression models or survival analyses but also more sophisticated approaches like competing risk analyses or mediation analyses. Moreover, I am part of the group that analyzes and studies data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, a multicenter cohort study involving more than 500,000 participants recruited in the 1990s from 10 different European countries (Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Sweden, Greece, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany) and followed over time. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between diet, nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental factors and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases (such as cardio/cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes). In 2023, I spent a period at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in Lyon, France, to conduct the study that I would like to present during this edition of the "Enrico Anglesio" prize.
